Mike Greenwell Passes Away at 62
Mike Greenwell, a Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer and Lee County Commissioner, has died at the age of 62.
Greenwell retired from Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1996 and took on the role of Lee County commissioner in 2022. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the third round of the 1982 MLB draft to play as a left fielder, staying with the team until his retirement.
In August, Greenwell revealed that he had been diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer. His son, Beau, shared the news of his passing on Facebook, noting, “It’s been a long year with a lot going on for him. Now he can finally rest in peace.” It seems the family has been through quite a lot over the past year.
His wife, Tracy, confirmed that he passed away at Boston General Hospital around 10:30 a.m.
The Lee County Government also expressed their condolences, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Commissioner Mike Greenwell, a lifelong county resident. He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to community challenges.” They offered their support to his family and friends during this tough time.
The Red Sox shared their sadness as well: “Gator spent his entire career in a Red Sox uniform and was a beloved figure in Fenway and Fort Myers. He made tremendous contributions to Lee County and Sox Nation,” they stated, sending their love to the Greenwell family.
Greenwell, a two-time All-Star and the 1988 Silver Slugger Award winner, was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2008. Over his career, he achieved a batting average of .303, with 130 home runs and 726 RBIs. His profile can be found on the MLB website.
