Yuma — Local high school elections are fast approaching, and the Yuma County Elections Authority is once again stepping up to help. The Office of Elections reached out to county school districts earlier this year to offer students a “Vote Center Experience.” Five high schools will participate in the 2023-2024 student council elections.

Working closely with schools, election services use student information to check-in to electronic voting pads using student ID cards or StudentVue QR codes to meet voter identification requirements. Upon check-in, students are provided with the correct voting style for their grade. They cast their ballots with electronic ballot-marking devices and tally their voted ballots at on-site vote center tally machines.

The goal of this experience is to enable young people to become more involved in the electoral process, as voters and volunteers. Voter Services staff are available to assist with questions and register eligible students. In Arizona, her 16-year-old and her 17-year-old, who will be 18 by the next general election, can pre-register to vote.

“We are extremely proud of our partnership with Yuma County Elections. Giving students the opportunity to have the same experience as registered voters will help students graduate from college, advance their careers, and prepare their communities. It’s just another example,” said YUHSD Associate Superintendent Tim Brienza.

“We are excited and grateful to continue facilitating student council elections and educating our young community in the voting process,” explains Yuma County Interim Elections Director Kika Guzman.

Yuma County Recorder Richard Colwell said the Vote Center experience was a unique opportunity for high school students to understand the importance of voting by participating in a simulated environment with real election equipment. .
