Yavapai County sheriff warns of kidnapping scam calls

Yavapai County officials are warning residents after a woman reported an attempted kidnapping scam for her 8-year-old daughter.

In Spanish, the man demanded money in exchange for his daughter’s safety, the mother said. Then he answered what sounded like a little girl, the sheriff’s office said.

The caller tried to get the family to bring the money at the local Walmart before the mother hung up and called 911, according to a sheriff’s office news release. Her child was confirmed safe at school and told her agent that no one approached her before or during school.

Agents were unable to track down the suspect because the phone number listed did not exist, according to the sheriff’s office.
