TUSAYAN, Arizona — As food and gas prices continue to rise, residents of remote communities such as Tusayan and the Grand Canyon are finding cost-effective ways to supplement their diets and extend their gas tanks a little farther. looking for.
That’s why the town of Tusayan has partnered with Coconino County Health and Human Services to offer gardening classes. Participants can learn low-cost options for growing their own food from start to finish.
Classes are held every Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Tusayan Town Hall. If you can’t participate in person, you can also participate on Zoom. Classes are free, but you must call Sharon Sifling at (928) 679-7257 or register by email. ssifling@coconino.az.gov.
Classes will focus on how to plan and prepare soil for gardening, how to care for growing plants, and how to save and use harvests at the end of the growing season.
In addition, Tusayan offers community gardens for its residents. Contact City Hall at (928) 638-9909 to register your spot. This year only, participants will be required to complete a Federal Survey and Income Questionnaire when requesting a parcel. Results will be kept anonymous, but the town should continue to receive grants to provide this and other services.
