Pima County Board of Supervisors continues to address homelessness

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) — The Pima County Board of Supervisors discussed an update on the county’s initiatives aimed at addressing homelessness at its regular meeting today.

For those experiencing homelessness in order to find a bed, they must go through a process called coordinated admission.

Tom Litwicki, CEO of Old Pueblo Community Services said: “They then send this list of names to various agencies.”

While this process is useful in theory, it also comes with challenges.

“We have people ahead of us who are in great need,” he said. “And while they’re with us now and could provide that service, they can’t because they have to wait for the coordinated immigration process.”

Deputy County Administrator Steve Holmes says he wants to expedite the process, but the shelters are full and other resources need to be found.

“So ultimately we’ll have to look at other systems to see how we can address these issues,” Holmes said.

Litwicki said he is working to create more spaces for people experiencing homelessness but needs more funding.

“There’s less money to spend,” Mr. Litwicky said. “We will do what we can to get people into these low-barrier shelter beds, but we won’t be anywhere near what we need for the next few years.”
