Yuma County prepares for the end of Title 42

County Supervisor Jonathan Lines gave a presentation on the county’s plans for May 11 and beyond.

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) – On Monday, the Yuma County Board of Supervisors is gearing up for the end of Title 42.

This policy has been used over two million times by the Biden and Trump administrations. To deport migrants to Mexico during the pandemic.

But there have been complaints from local legislators as they say they feel like the federal government is relying on them to solve the local border crisis.

County supervisor Jonathan Lines summarized a recent meeting with Border Patrol, saying that while local partnerships are strong, the federal government appears to rely on local communities to solve problems. said.

“Ultimately, Chief McGurk was asking the Yuma community what they could do for us,” Lines said.

But Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot says there are limits to what the county can do to help Border Patrol because federal immigration crime is out of its jurisdiction.

“The only thing that can be dealt with across the United States is individuals breaking state laws,” Wilmot said.

Immigrants arrive in Yuma on April 19th.

While the federal government seeks help, they often leave Yuma with bills for that help.

As the CEO of Yuma Regional Medical Center said, unpaid immigrant medical bills amount to $26 million.

“The challenge for us is that there is no source of payment for these individuals,” said Dr. Robert Trenschel.

Also feeling the pinch is the Border Health Area Center, which has prevented immigrants from being released into the community.

Recently, the organization was denied $300,000 by FEMA.

The Oversight Board has become increasingly frustrated with the federal government’s response to the border crisis.

“Every time we fix their problem, things get worse,” said supervisor Tony Reyes.

According to Supervisor Lines, the federal government estimates that there are as many as 700,000 immigrants waiting on the other side of the border for Title 42 to end.
