Ian Kirkwood has been named publisher of the Eastern Arizona Courier and the Copper Era in Safford, succeeding Belinda Mills.
A 20-year veteran of the news industry, Kirkwood lives in St. David and is the general manager of The Courier’s sister paper in Green Valley. He will join the staff on May 22nd.
“I am thrilled to be joining the Eastern Arizona Courier/Copper Era team! I can’t wait to join the community in the continued success of the newspaper,” said Kirkwood.
Francis Wick, CEO of Wick Communications, the newspaper’s parent company, said Kirkwood will bring leadership experience and first-hand understanding of rural communities to Graham and Greenlee counties.
“Ian’s background brings a variety of operational knowledge, from previously running thesis at Benson to understanding digital channels and small-town community engagement,” Wick said.
The Eastern Arizona Courier and Copper Era have been published since the 1890s and play an important role in reporting news, addressing issues, and helping communities in the two counties set high standards.

Mills moves to Las Cruces, New Mexico with her daughter and grandchildren. She accepted a position as the publisher of Osteen Media Group’s Southwest Regional Group.
“I will always cherish the time I spent in Eastern Arizona and the special people who live here. I have made wonderful friends and memories that will last a lifetime,” said Mills. “Now is the time to be with my family, and I have the opportunity to make that happen.”
Group publisher Dru Sanchez said Mills successfully rebranded The Copper Era and Eastern Arizona Courier during his tenure. Established EA Digital Solution Marketing. He founded the quarterly Eastern He Arizona He Lifestyle Magazine.

Kirkwood says he looks forward to learning more about Gila Valley and will rely on Mills’ insights during the transition.
