Erie County Executive Mark Polonkers noted a banner he saw at a church in Owego when he announced that he would not declare a state of emergency in response to potential asylum seekers.
Bloom, Tioga, and several other counties in upstate New York have declared states of emergency over concerns that immigrants will be sent into their communities.
Polonkers, a Democrat, issued a statement saying he would not declare a state of emergency over the possibility of legal asylum seekers being detained in Erie County.
County officials also said they would not issue orders banning asylum seekers from housing. “Such an order is not only illegal under Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is morally rebellious,” Polonkers said in his statement.
Polonkers said he spotted the banner in front of the Episcopal Church when he was in Owego to attend an event on Friday. “That banner perfectly expresses what many people need to hear: love, think and love neighbors who are unlike you.” Like you, you Speak like you, pray like you, vote like you. love your neighbor There are no exceptions. “
The banner mentioned by Mr. Polonkerts is in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the corner of Main and Liberty streets in Owego.
Polonkers was not immediately available for comment on Monday.
