Fighting mosquito viruses in Yuma County

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) – Mosquito counts in Yuma County are on the rise again due to heat and approaching monsoon season.

As well as being an annoying pest, they can also carry harmful diseases.

Richard Cumming, who has been involved in vector control in the county for nearly 30 years, went out to retrieve the trap early Tuesday morning.

He installed them near bodies of water and where locals reported frequent mosquito bites.

Richard Cumming divides mosquitoes into species.

However, setting and retrieving traps is only one step in the process.

He then brings the insect into his lab and puts it under the microscope.

They sorted them by species so they could be sent to the Arizona Department of Health to be tested for viruses like West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis.

Both existed in Yuma County.

“Last year we went through both at the same time, but we haven’t seen this year yet, so you never know what’s going to happen,” Cumming said.

For this reason, it is important to wear repellent, especially when venturing out to local lakes and rivers.

And take care of your neighborhood.

“Make sure there is no standing water on your property. If you see a neighbor with standing water, let them know and help,” Cumming said.

Last year, the virus was present in mosquito populations, Arizona Department of Health Services No human cases of either virus have been reported from Yuma County, according to data.

Thanks to the precautions taken by local residents and the work of county officials.

“When I first started this job, it was just to get a good job and benefits, but I soon found myself really into mosquito control. I find it fascinating and proud that what I do is actually saving lives,” Cumming said.
