Overseers Received:
Detention lieutenants work under the direct supervision of the captain, sergeant. Or a corporal. of detention.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Ability to make important decisions quickly and rationally, even in stressful situations.
- Good observational skills and the ability to deal with criminal elements that are dangerous, threatening, demanding and manipulative.
- Ability to prioritize tasks even in stressful situations.
- Ability to perform general job descriptions.
Work environment:
- Work is usually confined to indoor correctional facilities.
- Emergencies may require 24/7 response.
- We walk 75% of the time, sit 25% of the time, and climb stairs several times a day.
- Face-to-face contact with inmates.
- Occasionally, we work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- In some cases, you may have a long ride in the transport vehicle.
- Work takes place in a highly stressful, closed environment with minimal window exposure.
- Violent prisoners and exposure to disease pose a certain degree of risk to personal safety.
Physical demands:

- Vision – Individuals must be able to read handwritten or printed materials.
- Hearing – Individuals must have average hearing ability. The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate.
- Lifting – Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull a weight of at least 45 pounds.
- Mobility – Occasionally bending, kneeling, balancing, reaching, crawling, crouching when performing manual labor.
- Dexterity – Frequent use of eye-hand-finger coordination that enables the use of automated machinery.
- Communication – Must have a clear understanding of English and be understood while speaking English.
- Driving – Individuals must be able to drive a motor vehicle.
- *Sometimes: Activity is present less than 1/3 of the time.
- *Frequent: Activity is present for 1/3 to 2/3 of the time.
- *All the time: The activity exists more than 2/3 of the time.
