Phoenix – Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone wants to stay cool in the heat of the Phoenix subway.

Penzone said extreme summer heat in the Valley could affect people’s behavior.
“People get irritated because of the heat.

Penzone emphasized water safety as Valley residents flock to rivers and lakes for recreational activities, often accompanied by alcohol.
“We see many people hurting themselves or taking their lives simply because they are not as careful as they should be,” he said.
Penzone said the temperature in the county jail is temperature controlled with a backup generator, so the impact would not be significant.
“What is even more problematic is that the number of imprisonments has increased during this time,” he said. “We are going to see a surge.
But lawmakers who are outside answering phones, directing traffic, and wearing layers of equipment are going to really feel the heat.
“I ask people to be careful and respectful when you see them on the road, their job is very difficult and at this time of year the equipment and everything they carry is absolutely critical. Please understand that it is a heavy burden, your body,” Penzone said.
“So they have to stay hydrated. They have to stay indoors as much as possible.”
