Body camera footage showed Calderón climbing over the fence and calling out to the frightened dog. The officer first tried to remove the chain from the wooden fence it was attached to before attempting to pull the dog toward him, but the frightened pitbull was unfazed.

Calderón radios updates, calls the dog to reassure him, breaks part of the fence, and tries to coax the dog through the hole.

“It’s okay. It’s okay. I gotta jump over it! Come on!”

Officers then climbed into a neighboring yard and demanded bolt cutters from a person present. Finding nothing, he grabbed a hedge trimmer and ran back to the fence. There the dog jumped over the gap, still trapped in the chain.

I moaned with all my might and shouted, “Sorry doggy!” Facing the panicking pitbull, Calderon clenched the chain between the trimmer blades over and over until the link finally broke freeing the dog and leading it to safety.

The Irvine Police Department reported that Caldeon “never considered giving up and apparently saved the dog’s life.” After taking the dog to safety, he comforted it and said, ‘I told you I could believe you. ” ABC7 News.
