Controversial Maricopa County constable to resign

PHOENIX (AP) — A Maricopa County constable, subject to multiple ethical complaints, including a deadly shootout with a tenant, is stepping down.

AZ Family.com report Doug Clark wrote to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors notifying him that he will be stepping down on Saturday due to health concerns.

Clark, who served in the Agua Julia Judicial District, was recently reelected to a four-year term. Since 2010 he has been a Sergeant.

Maricopa County Constable Mike Branham said Clark’s departure didn’t stop the investigation.

The Arizona Republic reported that Clark admitted to improperly entering an evicted tenant’s home in July. It escalated into a shootout and the 32-year-old Tennant died. Neither Clark nor his deputy constable admit to shooting him.

Clark has a history of allegations including pretending to be a police officer and using excessive force on tenants. then fired him.

But other colleagues say Clark is a trustworthy cop.

The Supervisory Board will appoint an interim successor.
