Body-cam shows Maricopa police officers and K-9 taking violent suspect into custody

Maricopa, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) – Two Maricopa officers and police K-9 have been praised by the city’s police chief for the way they detained suspected violence.

Officers were able to subdue a suspect with teamwork and the well-timed assistance of a police dog last month, despite a failed Taser attack by one officer last month, according to a video obtained by an Arizona family. It is shown that “This is a great example of how a simple traffic stop can suddenly turn around and quickly lead to a dangerous encounter,” said Maricopa Police Chief Mark Goodman. “I thought our police officers did a great job.”

Police records show the incident began around 1:30 a.m. on July 16 with a routine traffic stop near John Wayne Parkway and Cobblestone Farms Drive. A police officer, identified in the records as “Police Officer Barnes,” stopped the vehicle on suspicion of deregistration. The man became suspicious because the passenger in the front passenger seat failed to show his ID and his name did not match the police record system, according to the chief and the video.

“And he dug a little deeper. Sure enough, he knows the passenger in the passenger seat isn’t him, and he has several arrest warrants,” the chief said.

As Officer Barnes tried to handcuff the man, the man punched him in the face and a brawl ensued. According to court records, the suspect was identified as 20-year-old Stanley Urate. Officer Burns attempted to use a Taser but was unsuccessful. The video shows a second police officer arriving and the two continuing to fight Urate.

But luckily the second officer happened to be the only K-9 handler in that division. The struggle ended when K-9 officer Karma charged the suspect. “The officers in this particular incident have done an excellent job of trying to defuse the situation using the tools available to them. They are trying to detain the violent suspect with the least amount of force necessary.” Chief Goodman said.

Urate faces multiple felonies, including aggravated assault on a police officer.
