Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputy injured by vehicle in East Mesa Friday

MESA, Ariz. — Officials say an on-duty Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputy was injured by a driver in East Mesa late Friday morning.

The incident happened just after 11:30 a.m. near Ellsworth Road and Main Street.

MCSO officials said deputies were conducting a welfare check on the individuals inside the vehicle.

Local Metro Fire officials initially said first responders were called to the scene to investigate two people who were reportedly passed out inside a vehicle in the area.

Authorities said the vehicle's occupant, later identified as a 31-year-old man, took off, causing the deputy to fall. The injured deputy was taken to the hospital for “precautionary reasons,” MCSO said.

The man was later found at a nearby Motel 6. According to MCSO, the man tried to run away again, but he was bitten by a Scottsdale police K-9. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but was later released into MCSO custody.

He was booked into jail on several charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
