Suspects in Pinal County teen attack indicted

Pinal County, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) –Two suspects accused of assaulting a teenage boy in Pinal County have been indicted by a grand jury. Authorities announced Wednesday that Jacob Lee Pennington, 20, and Garrett Bagshaw, 18, were charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

The alleged attack occurred nearby on November 18, 2023. Wagon road and quail road, a few miles south of Hunt Highway. According to court documents, Pennington punched the 16-year-old boy several times in the face while yelling racial slurs. Pennington reportedly punched the victim several times with a belt. Pinal County deputies said the victim was being held down by Pennington and kicked by others. Part of the attack was also caught on camera.

Pennington was later arrested at Gilbert's home. Shortly thereafter, officers arrested Bagshaw in Mesa as the second suspect in the attack. Court documents previously said he also admitted to being involved with a group called the “Gilbert Goons.”

Several police departments in the Valley have a focus on teen violence. Other Gilbert teens were also arrested in connection with separate attacks across the East Valley. Authorities announced Wednesday that 18-year-old Kyler Renner, 19-year-old Gage Garrison, and a 17-year-old boy were taken into custody in connection with the 2022 attack. Renner and Garrison appeared in court Thursday morning and were each charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault.
