Mayorkas Dodges Question From NBC Host Kristen Welker On Whether He Agrees With Biden That Border Is ‘Not Secure’

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Chief Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday dodged NBC host Kristen Welker's question about whether he agreed with President Joe Biden's opinion that the southern border is “not secure.” Ta.

Mayorkas appeared on “Meet the Press” to discuss the ongoing southern border crisis and his views on the system. Mr. Welker asked the Secretary of Homeland Security whether he was taking “responsibility” for the border issue, noting that Mr. Biden himself had called the border a “crisis.”

Mayorkas said that while the border issue is a “crisis,” the department does not “owe rationality” to a “broken system” and instead blamed Congress as the only department that can “fix it.” Ta. “But are you responsible for what's happening at the border, which the president himself has called a crisis?” Welker asked.

“This is certainly a crisis, and we are not responsible for a broken system. And we are working tremendously within that broken system, but basically we can fix it. It’s just Congress,” Mayorkas said.

Welker continued to press Mayorkas on border security, asking if he agreed with Biden's recent comments that the border is “not secure.” The Homeland Security secretary began by saying that the border issue “has been around for 10 years,” but Mr. Welker interrupted Mr. Biden by asking if he now agreed with him. “You have testified for years that the border is secure, but President Biden has said in recent comments that the border is not secure. Do you agree with President Biden's assessment that it is not secure?” Welker pressed.

“Kristen, border challenges have been around for many years. The president rightly pointed out that these challenges have been around for 10 years. In fact, they've been around for even longer,” Mayorkas said.

“So, do you agree with him?” Welker jumped in.

“There's no question that our system is broken. There's no question that we have a challenge, a crisis at the border, and there's no question that Congress needs to fix it.” Instead, we are doing everything we can in that broken system, short of legislation, to address what is and isn't a problem. This is simply a challenge for the United States. But it’s a challenge for our entire region,” Mayorkas said.
