Maricopa County confirms 569 people died from heat in 2023

In 2023, a record 569 heat-related deaths were confirmed, with 60 deaths still under investigation.

Phoenix — The Maricopa County Public Health Department An additional 100 people were confirmed to have died from heat-related deaths in 2023. The additional 100 deaths will bring the cumulative total of heat-related deaths in Maricopa County to 569 in 2023.

This is the largest number of heat-related deaths in county history and a 33% increase from 2022.

The Department of Public Health releases weekly reports detailing the number of confirmed heat-related deaths, the number of deaths under investigation, and demographic information about cases. The first heat-related death was reported in April 2023.

There will still be 60 heat-related deaths in 2023, which the Public Health Agency is investigating. In 2022, 425 heat-related deaths were recorded. As of November 1, 66 cases in 2022 are still under investigation.

There are two ways to classify heat-related deaths: heat-related deaths and heat-related deaths. Heat deaths are cases where heat or heat exposure is listed as part of the cause of death on the death certificate. In other words, heat is the direct cause of death.

For heat-related deaths, heat exposure is listed on the second part of the death certificate, but nowhere on the first part. This means that while heat may be involved, it is not the direct cause of death.

Numbers reported by public health departments can change from week to week. Cases can move out of the “under investigation” category and become confirmed or unconfirmed, and numbers can also change with additional data received.
