‘No show’ Maricopa County constable resigns

Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) — The controversy over Maricopa County's “no-show” constables may be nearing an end.

His resignation comes days after an Arizona family revealed that Maricopa Police Officer Luke Palmer had been collecting paychecks without reporting to work for months. His colleague first reported him. Mr. Palmer submitted his resignation and informed his family in Arizona that he could no longer serve as a police officer after three years of service. But he won't say why he continued to cash in his paycheck, even though he hasn't worked since November.

The Arizona family reached out to Palmer by phone last week to confirm that he was no longer performing his duties as a Maricopa County constable and was working for an air conditioning company in Gilbert. Mr. Palmer submitted his resignation. Maricopa County Board of Supervisorseffective February 27th.

“I think he finally thought about it and realized he couldn't go on any longer,” Maricopa County Officer Nathan Wallace said. “If he's not going to come back and do the job, I think he was right to resign.”

On Monday, Palmer sent the following statement to Arizona's family:

Scott Blake is president of the Arizona Police Officers Association.. He said Palmer's resignation will allow the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to appoint a replacement. “I think it's honorable to step down and step down and allow other people to come in and do their jobs,” Blake said. “Public trust is very important.”
