Dead animals found in freezer of woman’s home in Cochise County

Hereford, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — A southern Arizona woman is facing more than 100 charges of animal cruelty after police officers found dead and abandoned animals in her home earlier this week. On Monday, Cochise County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested 56-year-old Jill Houchens.

Investigators began the investigation on February 6 after receiving reports of animal abuse at Houchens' home in Hereford. Located approximately 18 miles west of Bisbee. Officials said there were reports that several animals were living in “unsanitary conditions” and there were carcasses in freezers.

Authorities said they searched Houchens' home three days later and found several animals living in “extremely poor conditions.” Deputies said some areas were filled with feces and there was no clean place for them to stand. Investigators said there was little water and no food left behind.

A total of 24 animals were removed from the Houchens' home. Four dogs and one cat were found dead in the freezer. Eight required medical attention for embedded nail infections and severe matting.

Deputies said Houchens previously provided pet sitting services and conducted animal rescue operations around Cochise County. She faces 27 felonies and 119 misdemeanors.

Investigators said Houchens was employed by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office as an animal control officer from 2012 to 2017.
