Tuscaloosa student selected for elite U.S. Navy summer flight academy

A Tuscaloosa High School student will receive a very high honor this summer.

Northridge High School student Maureen York was selected as one of 28 outstanding 11th and 12th graders nationwide to complete the intensive, eight-week U.S. Navy Summer Flight Academy aviation program at Elizabeth City State College in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

The program was established in 2021 by the Commander of the Naval Air Force (CNAF) to increase exposure to naval aviation, and upon completion of the program, York will earn his FAA Private Pilot License.

“The goal of the scholarship program is to inspire and introduce talented young talent from communities across the nation to a career path in naval aviation,” said Tamara Graham, CNAF Flight Academy deputy director of program management. “Maureen York has shown incredible potential, and the Navy is honored to contribute to her personal and professional journey.”

York will receive a minimum of 32 hours of aviation coursework, more than 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 single-engine aircraft or a Piper Warrior (PA-28), and 17 hours of solo flying.
