Illegal border crossings are the number of encounters reported by the Border Patrol between ports of entry, as opposed to total border encounters, which also include the number of inadmissible aliens encountered at ports of entry.

The increase in crossings at the northern border comes as the Biden administration has overseen a recent decline in the number of illegal immigrants showing up at the southern border. According to CBP data, Border Patrol agents reported that 170,723 illegal immigrants crossed the border in May, marking the third consecutive month of declines in illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Since taking office, Biden has been battling the crisis on the southern border, issuing a series of executive orders that reversed many of former President Donald Trump's border security policies, including building a border wall and implementing the Remain in Mexico policy. The president later issued an executive order placing a cap on the number of asylum seekers allowed at the U.S.-Mexico border each day.

The border crisis has hit the president hard, with recent polls showing that fewer than 30% of Americans approve of his handling of the immigration issue.
