Phoenix (AZ Family) The two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for Maricopa County sheriff faced off in a televised debate on Tuesday.
It will be the final time that incumbent Sheriff Russ Skinner and Tyler Kamp face off before early voting begins next week for the July 30 primary election.
It was a typical primary debate: There were some differences of opinion on policy, but the main argument erupted over each other's records.
Skinner, who was appointed earlier this year after Paul Penzone resigned, wants to stay on in the position.
Skinner spent an hour onstage touting his decades of experience working for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
But Kamp said Skinner's experience matters.
Kamp is a 20-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, while Skinner's employment history also includes working for Joe Arpaio.
Under Arpaio's leadership, the sheriff's office engaged in racial profiling.
For that reason, Kamp said, the public will never trust Skinner.
Skinner, a lifelong Republican, recently switched to the Democrats, making him eligible to run for sheriff after Penzone resigns.
