U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) publicly opposed the Hyde Amendment on Tuesday, slamming the Biden administration for trying to use taxpayer funds to buy abortions.
When HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra recently testified before the U.S. Senate about the health care budget request, Britt questioned him about the administration's pro-abortion stance.
The Biden administration has made it clear that it will not draw the line when it comes to taking an unborn child’s life.
And now they're admitting they want taxpayers' hard-earned money to fund abortions. I will not stop fighting to protect the Hyde Amendment.pic.twitter.com/KjySWgfeFN

“[Y]”Our answer has been, over and over again, 'Roe v. Wade,' 'Roe v. Wade,' 'I want that to be the law of the land,' so let's assume your hypothetical is true,” Britt said. “If Roe v. Wade was the law of the land and a woman wanted to take her child's life the day before or the day after her due date, you would support her right to choose to do so. Is that correct?”
After Becerra didn't directly answer the question, Britt pressed further.
“No. I have made it clear that Roe v. Wade is part of the law of the land,” she said, “so there are seven states in this country and the District of Columbia that allow you to take a child's life just before it's born. So you clearly support a woman's right to choose to do that.”

Senator Becerra then countered that Britt's example was “fiction,” to which the senator pushed back.
“If it's really fiction, why don't you say no? It's unthinkable and I don't think women can do that,” Britt said. “Because if you say taxpayer money should be used for abortions, you're saying my taxpayer money should be used for that. And if it's unthinkable, why don't you say it's unthinkable?”
“And in fact, we can take that off the table and not allow it to be legalized,” she added, “because when you do that, the truth is … let me read this to you: 'Specifically, when these abortions are performed, horrific surgical techniques are used that crush, dismember and remove the fetal body.'
“So, they actually have to deliver the baby breech, put scissors in the baby's neck, cut open the baby's brain, suck out the brain so it can pass through the birth canal, and then, if the baby is delivered alive, they also have the opportunity to actually kill the child by putting a needle in the child's heart. Do you believe that we should be able to save that child on that operating table? Or do you believe that our taxpayer money gives this woman the right to say, 'Don't save my child'?”
The senator then stressed that he would always work to protect the Hyde Amendment.
“When we're talking about this, you have the audacity to say, 'No, taxpayer money goes to (abortion),' and then you refuse to answer the question about Roe v. Wade, so I accept your assumption as fact,” she said. “There are seven states in this country and the District of Columbia that still allow it. We're one of seven countries in the country that allow it. The other two are North Korea and China. When we're talking about the budget, I want you to know where I come from and why I truly believe we must protect the Hyde Amendment.”
