New polling previews Alabama CD2 runoff, general election outcomes

A new poll from Montgomery Research and Signal looks ahead to next Tuesday's primary runoff election for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District and even into November's general election.

Among 473 Republicans surveyed by Montgomery Research ahead of next Tuesday's runoff election, Carolyn Dobson led former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker with 42 percent of the vote, with Brewbaker at 37 percent and 22 percent of voters remaining undecided.

The Democratic primary showed Shomali Figures holding a decisive lead over his opponent, state assemblyman Anthony Daniels, with Figures receiving an overwhelming 59% support among 452 people surveyed, Daniels receiving 24%, and 17% remaining undecided.

Their poll found that if Dobson and Figures were to face off against each other for the seat, Figures would have a slim lead over Dobson (Figures 45%, Dobson 44%, undecided 16%).

Their poll also found that if Brewbaker beat Dobson in the runoff, he would have 43% support to Figures' 45%, with 11% undecided.

According to a Montgomery Research poll, Brewbaker is leading Daniels 43% to 41%, but Dobson is projected to win with 44% and Daniels with 40%.

Also, according to another survey, signalBrewbaker is shown to have a more favorable view among African-American voters than Dobson.

While the same survey suggests that 30% of African-American voters support a candidate other than Joe Biden for president or are undecided, the number of African-American voters who view Brewbaker favorably is similar to the number who view former President Donald Trump favorably.

Inflation is the biggest issue among African-American voters, who make up nearly half of the voting-age population in the 2nd Congressional District. The primary runoff elections for both parties will be held next Tuesday, April 16, 2024.
