British law enforcement made numerous arrests of “Stop the Oil” activists on Thursday and Friday.
At least 27 Just Stop Oil associates were arrested by authorities this summer in a plot to disrupt normal operations at the airport. according to Just Stop Oil and British media reports say it receives funding from wealthy American liberals who donate to the Climate Emergency Fund (CEF), which routes the money to British activist groups through a coalition of European climate protest groups known as the A22 Network, according to its website. CEF and A22.
“You are dangerous extremists who believe that governments have no right to oppress the entire world by encouraging the extraction and burning of fossil fuels,” Just Stop Oil said in a statement in response to those arrested on Friday. “But we will not be intimidated. The painful truth today is that our politicians and corporations are unwilling to act in accordance with the fundamental interests of our youth and the country as a whole. Just Stop Oil claims that the “only crime” of those detained was supporting the group, but authorities arrested them after they publicly disclosed their plans to disrupt the airport's operations later in the summer. At least 27 people have been arrested, including prominent members of the group. according to In The Guardian.
“Our position is that anyone who endangers the safety and security of London's airports will face a strong response from officers and security personnel,” Metropolitan police Commissioner Ian Howells said of the arrests. according to “Airports are complex operational environments so we are working closely with the airport, relevant agencies and other partners on this operation,” he told the BBC.
Since its inception, Just Stop Oil has conducted numerous disruptive and confrontational protests, including targeting prominent sporting events, museums, memorials and artifacts.
Prominent American donors to the CEF, one of Just Stop Oil's backers, include Hollywood executives Adam McKay and Jeremy Strong and the charitable foundations of oil heirs Eileen Getty and Abigail Disney. according to To CEF's 2023 Annual Report.
