When a death is listed as “under investigation,” it means the county coroner suspects heatstroke was the cause of death.
MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — As of July 6, the Maricopa County Coroner's Office is investigating more than 200 deaths as possible causes of heat stroke. County data shows.
As of July 6, Maricopa County has confirmed 14 heat-related deaths in 2024. Of the 14, 9 were caused by heat exhaustion and 5 were contributory. There are 234 deaths under investigation.
