Winter comes to Cochise County

Even in southeastern Arizona, a state synonymous with hot weather, many residents were hoping for a white Christmas, and while the winter wonderland many dreamed of on Christmas morning didn't materialize, there's a good chance some snow will fall over the first few days of the new year.

Frost likely for New Year in Southeast Arizona

Somewhere in the back of my car is a stray Mittens who got separated from her mate last spring when I packed away my scarves, hats, and heavy coats. I've been determined ever since to reunite the two when the weather gets colder. That time is about to come, probably this week.

If you live in Cochise County, it's time to pull out those boxes of winter clothing you've been saving for the colder months, as snow is expected to fall in the area starting this week.

according to AccuWeatherThe 2023-2024 winter forecast calls for most of the U.S., except for the Pacific Northwest, to see the potential for above-normal snowfall, especially in areas that typically see significant amounts.

The possibility of heavy snow is increasing due to this year's typhoons. El Nino Weather patterns will continue to affect our weather through the remainder of the season.

When will it snow in Cochise County?

AccuWeather Cochise County is expected to see between 6 and 12 inches of snow throughout the winter, with higher elevation areas such as Bisbee and mountain areas expected to see up to 12 inches of snow overall.

In the next week or two, Atmospheric Rivers The cold front coming in from California will bring winter storms to our area. Overall, this winter has been colder than normal across the county, including Arizona, but there is good news for those looking to enjoy skiing and other winter activities.

Snow may not fall much this week, but there could be some scattered snow showers, as is common when snow falls in Cochise County, but it won't accumulate enough to close schools or businesses.

That way you'll have plenty of time to dig out your winter clothes box and get some mittens and gloves ready for the cold weather.
