“I think it's about aspiration in the same way that rap and hip-hop music is about aspiration. … I think women mostly live in reality, but men often live in aspiration. And … maybe some people want to be like Trump, maybe some people want their own plane, maybe they love not having to be accountable to anybody,” Lemon said.

“He's like Teflon and everybody wants that. It's like a man's sexuality, like, 'Hey, don't touch me,' you know?” Lemon continued. “I get the same thing from young men, I call them 'bro dudes,' [Joe] Rogan is kind of a podcast type of… not to put down anybody, but it's a fact. It's kind of a rule. 'I don't have any rules. I don't have to get the vaccine, I don't have to wear a mask, I don't have to follow any rules.' And I think that's appealing because that's who Trump is.”

Deutsch added that there are “definitions of masculinity” that suggest those who follow the rules are “to some extent emasculated.”

“A wimp. A cuckold. A soy boy,” Lemon replied, and Deutsch burst out laughing.

A June New York Times/Siena College poll found that Trump had the support of 26% of black voters, 67% of whom said the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction under President Joe Biden. vote.

Democratic strategists James Carville and Deutsch warned in a June episode of their “On Brand” podcast that men, particularly “Hispanic men,” are fleeing the Democratic Party.

“We have a problem with men on all fronts, but especially — I hate the word, but I'll use it — 'communities of color' are treated like everyone who isn't white is the same. It's ridiculous,” Carville said. “And I think — and people got a little angry when I told The New York Times — that there are too many preachy women in Democratic culture. It's too much, 'Don't eat burgers, don't watch football, wear a condom,' and stuff like that. Come on, leave me alone, OK? I've got a life to live. Look, there's a guy who works in a tire repair shop outside Atlanta, working 50 hours a week and making $16.50 an hour, and he wants to watch a football game, he wants to smoke pot, he wants to drink beer.”
