CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on Thursday pointed to some clues about the severity of former President Donald Trump's ear injury following Saturday's assassination attempt.
Gupta reflected on the lack of information about ear injuries sustained at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where 20-year-old suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight shots into the crowd. Medical experts have described injuries that Trump may have sustained.
“You could see the president put his hand up to the side of his face. He fell, but he fell on his own. He didn't collapse or anything like that. He eventually got up. He was able to walk to his car, he was able to hold his hand up. Those were all significant medical clues and definitely good signs for him,” Gupta explained.

Gupta said the bone behind his right ear is thin and that doctors will need to examine it for other damage to the brain, inner ear and other surrounding bones. Sources reportedly told Gupta that a computed tomography (CT) scan of Trump came back normal and ruled out many other injuries and problems that may have been caused by the shooting. Gupta said the hospital where Trump was treated did not provide Trump with specific information about his injuries.
“Again, this is amazing, Jake. [Tapper]”I've been in this business for a long time and the details of this horrific injury are still unclear,” Gupta continued.
In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump said the bullet “went through” the top of his right ear and that he heard a “whoosh” and a “gunshot” while feeling the bullet “cut through his skin.”
“At this time, we know nothing about the shooter, who is now deceased. I was shot above my right ear with a bullet that penetrated it,” Trump wrote. “I knew immediately something was wrong as I heard the whoosh and the gunshot and felt the bullet penetrate my skin. I was bleeding heavily and I knew then what was happening. God Bless America!”
Left-leaning media pundits have raised many questions and suspicions about the former president's injury. MSNBC analyst Michael Steele Questioned Whether he was actually hit by a high-caliber bullet and not a shard of glass, Trump said during an appearance on the network's “The Reid Out” show on Tuesday.
MSNBC's Ari Melber speculated on Tuesday whether President Trump's bandage on his right ear was a “political attempt” to gain sympathy and political clout.
The shooting killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore as he was shielding his two daughters with a body shield.
