Commentators Who Say Trump Is ‘Changed Man’ After Shooting Should Face ‘Lifetime Ban,’ James Carville Says

Democratic strategist James Carville on Monday attacked critics who claim former President Donald Trump has “changed” after the recent assassination attempt, arguing that these people “should be banned from any activity for life.”

NBC's Katie Tur and Chuck Todd on Tuesday expressed shock at Trump's “bizarre” behavior at the Republican National Convention (RNC) so soon after the assassination attempt. Carville said:The Bulwark PodcastHe said suggesting Trump had “changed” showed a “staggering ignorance” of human character, and Trump in particular, and argued that anyone who says such a thing should no longer be speaking publicly. “My favorites are Van Jones and Dan Abrams, and I love both of them, and they talk about Trump changing. What the hell are you talking about? Anyone who says that should be banned for the rest of their life. I mean, that's an astonishing ignorance of a person, especially Donald Trump,” Carville said. “I love this one: 'He was a changed man, let me tell you…he found God.' Yeah, that's true. Absolutely. That's true.”

A bandaged and wounded Trump appeared in public for the first time since being shot in the ear at the Republican National Convention, where he was emotional and drew thunderous applause.

“I've never seen him look like that,” Tarr said. “I've never seen him walk into a room and look so overwhelmed. It was like he was overwhelmed. Can you honestly ask whether that close call with death changed him?”

“You know, you're not alone,” Todd responded. “I think we've all noticed this and we've all had various conversations about, 'This seems like another Trump.' He's a human being. I think sometimes we treat presidential candidates so much like caricatures that we forget that there are humans here.”

On Thursday, Carville criticized some Trump supporters for believing “God is protecting him” after Trump survived an assassination attempt.

“I've said this many times on this show, but I've always thought that Trump is seen by his supporters as a theological figure, not a secular one, and of course, the fact that Trump came so close to having his head blown off is just further proof to them that they were right and that God is protecting Trump,” Carville said. “Trump…Do I think it's all ridiculous? Of course…Do I think it's a perversion of everything conceivable? Yes, of course…But to them, this is just further proof that Trump was sent here by God.”
