A majority of Democrats support Vice President Kamala Harris, but a minority think she could actually beat former President Donald Trump in November's presidential election, according to an AP/NORC poll released Wednesday.
After President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race on July 21, nearly 8 in 10 Democrats said they were satisfied with their presumptive nominee, and 80% said she would be a good president. according to The poll found that only 71% of Democrats believe Harris can beat Trump in the next election. Just days after announcing her candidacy, Harris had garnered endorsements from leading Democrats, raised tens of millions of dollars in donations and secured enough delegate support to become the presumptive nominee.
Still, polls show Republicans have more confidence in their candidate than Democrats: About 70% of Democrats say Harris will win, while about 90% of Republicans are confident Trump will be the next president. The poll found that independents' trust leaned slightly more towards Trump, with 56% saying they believed the former president would win, while just 39% said the same about Harris.
Polls suggest a common thread among American attitudes is pessimism: Two-thirds of adults say they are pessimistic about the state of politics in the country, and nearly half are pessimistic about the way our political system chooses its leaders. The poll was conducted July 25-July 29 among 1,143 adults aged 18 and over and has a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points.
