Trey Gowdy Tells Fox News Panel Which Question He Believes FBI Should Ask Trump

Former Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina said Thursday that FBI agents investigating the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump should ask the Republican candidate what he was told before speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

President Trump was slightly injured in an assassination attempt on July 13 that killed former volunteer fire chief Cory Comperatore and seriously injured two rally attendees. Gowdy, who said President Trump was both a witness and a victim, speculated that he may be asked questions about “oversight” when he is interviewed by the FBI about the shooting. “The problem here is there are no indictments. You're not indicting a body,” Gowdy told Fox News host Martha MacCallum. “Yes, you're going to talk to him. He's a victim and a witness. What I'm really interested in is whether they ask him any supervision-related questions, like, 'By the way, Mr. former president, what did they tell you before you went onstage?'” What is this law enforcement investigation for, since there are no indictments? We need to know the who, what, when, where, how and why. But there are no indictments in the standard way that we're accustomed to. This guy[Thomas Crooks] Dead.”

The Secret Service has come under fire for security failings during the rally: former director Kimberly Cheatle resigned after delivering disastrous testimony before the House Oversight Committee at a July 22 hearing, while Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr. was grilled at a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Homeland Security committees on Tuesday.(Related: Christopher Wray reveals new details about the gun used in the assassination attempt on President Trump)

Former FBI agent Nicole Parker explained what she plans to ask Trump during victim interviews and criticized FBI Director Christopher Wray for suggesting Trump may not have suffered a gunshot wound.

“What I want to hear is what was said to you before you went on stage, what happened, what is your recollection, and what happened immediately after you got off stage. I think it's important to know,” Parker told McCollum. “I agree with Trey, there will not be a trial. As far as we know, the FBI says there were no co-conspirators, so the suspect is dead. But I think what this case shows is President Trump's willingness and full cooperation with the investigation. Frankly, with his history with the FBI, if I were him, I would probably say everybody can hang their hats on, but he's not.”
