Maher went on to remind Pelosi that AB 1840 is “a bill for illegal immigrants.” Specifically, the bill makes illegal immigrants with Social Security or tax ID numbers eligible for cash assistance through a program called “California Dream for All,” which provides up to $150,000 to first-time homebuyers and requires interest payments only if the recipient sells the property.
“Well, what I would like to do is put them on the record,” Pelosi said, before her voice was momentarily drowned out by applause from the live crowd.
Republicans who oppose AB 1840 argue that cash-strapped state resources should be used to help Americans in need. Some moderate Democrats have joined Republicans in trying to block the bill in the state legislature, according to Politico. The bill is now on the desk of California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, but the governor has declined to comment on whether he will sign the bill into law.
