Democratic pollster Cornell Belcher said Tuesday that Vice President Kamala Harris needs to connect herself to President Joe Biden's accomplishments without facing the fallout from his unpopularity.
Democratic strategist James Carville wrote in The New York Times: Editorial On Tuesday, Belcher advised Harris to “make a firm break” from Biden's policies, arguing that the 2024 election is “an election of change.” Belcher told “The Katy Tarr Report” that Americans are “looking for change” and that Harris can provide that change because of her age, gender and race, but that she also needs to focus on the future while highlighting the accomplishments of a Biden-Harris administration. “We're going into another election cycle where American voters are looking for change, and I believe Harris is that change. She's a woman of color, and she's running as the top candidate,” Belcher told host Katie Tur. “She's a woman of color, and she's running as the top candidate. Voters have debated and they've been looking for someone younger and more youthful, and she's clearly that person.”
“Katie, she has to walk a tightrope because she's tied to Biden to some degree and she can't stray too far from him. So she has to talk about their accomplishments. And as we've said before, there are a lot of accomplishments that this president has accomplished that are really popular,” he continued. “More popular than he is. So she has to tie herself to those, but also look to the future.”
Biden's approval rating was at 42.3% as of Tuesday, down about 10 percentage points since taking office in January 2021. According to To FiveThirtyEight.
“I think that this shift towards the future and this discussion about a better America, a more unified America, a freer America is the perfect contrast to Donald Trump, who is trying to take back our country and bring back our freedoms in every way possible,” Belcher added. “I think that's a change, but Katie, it's a tightrope walk, because she can't stray too far from the man who brought her there in the first place.”
Former CNN political analyst Chris Cillizza said on “Morning in America” on Tuesday that as a member of the Biden administration, Harris will have to “take on” Biden's unpopular policies.
“I think she'll start this nine-week sprint with a slight lead, but there's still plenty of time. And she's dealing with an unpopular president,” Cillizza said. “Joe Biden is unpopular, and almost all of his policies, whether it's foreign policy, economic policy, immigration policy, are unpopular with the American people. And Kamala Harris is going to have to acknowledge that to some degree over the next 63 days.”
