Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to federal tax charges in California on Thursday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
The president's son pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor and three felony charges for failing to pay at least $1.4 million in taxes and filing false tax documents. According to He told CNN that U.S. District Judge Mark Scarci of the Central District of California found the defendant guilty and that sentencing is scheduled for December 16th.
Some legal experts, including former senior Justice Department official John Yoo, have said the president's son is likely to face prison time. (Related story: Hunter Biden's tax trial begins this week. He faces up to 17 years in prison.)

CNN reported that Hunter Biden's legal team attempted to enter a so-called “Alford plea” early Thursday, in which Hunter would essentially plead innocent while accepting whatever punishment he may ultimately receive. His legal team said later in the day that Hunter Biden would enter an “open plea,” in which Hunter Biden would essentially admit that his actions satisfy the charges he faces.
According to CNN, prosecutors had alleged that Hunter Biden spent his money on luxury hotels, prostitutes and cars at the time he was evading taxes. The president's son said in a sworn statement Thursday that no one promised or pressured him to plead guilty.
President Joe Biden has previously said he would not use his power to pardon his son, according to CNN, but it is unclear if the president's position has changed since he dropped out of the presidential race in 2024. Hunter Biden was convicted of three federal firearms charges by a Delaware jury in June.
