Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) — The Maricopa County Public Health Department has confirmed the county’s first child death from influenza this season.
Health officials did not disclose the sex or age of the victim, but said the child had not been vaccinated. county officials reported childhood flu deathsmarking the first such death of the season statewide.
Dr. Nick Stave, a medical epidemiologist with the Maricopa County Public Health Department, said: “This is a reminder that anyone who can get a flu shot needs to protect not only themselves, but those around them who are most at risk of severe illness or death from the flu. It’s a tragedy to come.”
As of this week, Maricopa County has reported over 16,000 cases of the virus. Last month, an Arizona family reported that state health officials were witnessing higher-than-average flu activity.
News of the death comes hours after Sonora Quest Laboratories announced the availability of a new nasal swab that offers a combined respiratory 3:1 test for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza. Eligible Arizonans can request to be tested through their regular health care provider.
Influenza was the 11th leading cause of death in Arizona in 2019. Every year, depending on the severity of the season, he kills 5,000 to 60,000 people nationwide from the flu.
