Phoenix, September 11, 2024–(Business Wire)–Maricopa County Sheriff candidate Tyler Kamp appeared with local NBC affiliate 12 News' Troy Hayden to discuss his qualifications for the job, share his vision and explain why Maricopa County can't go back.
When asked by Hayden why he was running and why voters should support him, Kamp responded, “I've always been someone who wants to serve a cause bigger than myself. I think the need is clear. We've seen the discrimination and human rights violations against people of color that have happened in the past that have cost the county nearly $300 million and counting. So I think we know we need a quality sheriff. I served with the Phoenix Police Department for over 20 years, more than half of that time investigating organized crime, criminal street gangs, homicides and unsolved homicides. I have 10 years of experience in leadership, public safety and leadership.”
Hayden asked about MCSO's staffing shortages and the infamous court orders that began during the Joe Arpaio-Jerry Sheridan administration.
Kamp revealed his plans for the future, highlighting his vision for the sheriff's office once it graduates from the court order: “I'm going to work with the Board of Supervisors to create a merit-based pay structure similar to other law enforcement agencies in the valley. I'm going to create a walk-in health clinic that meets their needs as well as ours.” [employees’] Not only are physical needs important, but mental needs are important too. We have to ensure justice for everyone. We have to keep politics out of public safety. When you talk to people across the county, they say they don't want to get politics involved because it can undermine public safety. And we have to make sure everyone knows that there is equal justice for everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from.”
