MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — Maricopa County will receive $15 million to install new electric vehicle charging stations in areas open to the public.

Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly announced Thursday that the Maricopa County Air Quality Department will receive funding from the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program.

“These clean energy investments show we can make real progress to improve air quality while ensuring our communities have the infrastructure they need,” Kelly said in a statement.

The funds will be used to install new charging stations at participating facilities. Maricopa County Travel Reduction ProgramIt began in 1989 as an effort to reduce air pollution in the valley.

The Phoenix metropolitan area has historically been rated as having some of the worst air quality in the country.

In 2022, Arizona was awarded a $76 million grant to build charging stations along the state's highways.
