CNN anchor Kate Bolduan said Friday that the Biden-Harris administration's economic messaging has been ineffective because former President Donald Trump has the upper hand on key issues.
When asked who viewers of Tuesday's debate thought would do more to help the economy as president, Trump led Harris 55% to 35%. According to The Biden-Harris administration said there was “no convincing explanation” for the poor polling performance on the economy, according to a CNN preliminary poll, and that the administration cannot continue to blame the poll results on voters not getting their message. “Let's refocus on the big issue that will be in the spotlight again next week, and that's the economy. The Fed will likely consider cutting interest rates for the first time since the early days of the pandemic. What does that mean at this point in the race? Because this is a delicate situation,” Bolduan said. “There are potentially good signs that Kamala Harris can talk about what's called late-stage change, but Donald Trump is beating her on the economy. Instant polling after the debate showed Harris leading by 20 points on the economy, even though the majority said she won the debate.”
“I'm really interested to see how the debate on the economy plays out next week. The responses I've heard from administration officials and Democrats to the questions of 'Why isn't she getting the economic stimulus package right?' and 'Why didn't Biden get the economic stimulus package right?' have been unsatisfactory so far. They're not getting our message,” she added later in the show. “And at some point, I'm asking: What's the expiration date on that logic? Because there has to be an expiration date at some point.”
An undecided voter in Pennsylvania told NBC News on Wednesday that while she believes Trump is a “racist,” she might still vote for him because she thinks he would improve her economic situation.
More than 55% of voters believe Trump could manage the economy better than Harris. According to A New York Times/Siena College poll conducted Sunday found that 21% of voters said the economy is their top priority in the November election.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen argued in June that polls showed Americans were not worried about their personal or local economic situations.
“When asked about their own situation, the vast majority of people say it's OK,” Yellen said, “and when asked about their local economy, they also say it's OK. But when asked about the national economy, they think it's not good. And … this is really something we've never seen before in the United States.”
