“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski expressed incredulity Friday at the trend of undecided voters supporting former President Donald Trump.
After President Trump debated Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday at an event moderated by ABC News hosts David Muir and Lindsey Davis, the hosts came under fire for repeatedly interrupting President Trump and not “fact-checking” Harris' comments during the debate. Brzezinski asked New York Times reporter Jeremy Peters why Harris wasn't being endorsed. (Related: CNN host says voters 'don't really know' Kamala Harris' policy proposals)
“Jeremy, in your new piece, 'Experts Say Harris Won the Debate, But Undecided Voters Not So Convinced,' you write: 'Many of the undecided voters that The Times has interviewed regularly over the past few months said in our interviews that they conceded Harris was more presidential than Trump and that she offered a comprehensive vision for solving some of the country's most stubborn problems, but also said she didn't seem much different from Biden and that they wanted change. And above all, what they wanted to hear but didn't hear were the details. Voters said they're glad that Harris has a tax and economic plan, but they want to know how it becomes law at a time when Washington is so polarized. They know that Harris wants to give first-time homebuyers help, but they wonder whether it's realistic,'” Brzezinski said.

“Jeremy, is their answer Donald Trump? Because I think I understand the question,” Brzezinski continued. “I think there was a limit to how effective she was in that debate. Of course, there are many more questions. I would love to hear from Kamala Harris about her leadership style, her plans, how she executes. But are undecided voters saying, 'I want change, so am I going to lean to Trump?' I don't know.”
While corporate media pundits praised Harris' debate performance, voters' assessment was far more mixed, with six of the 10 debaters asked by Reuters say They were more likely to support Trump after the debate.
“People don't know much about her,” Peters told Brzezinski. “A lot of voters and Democratic strategists have said that she's well-known as a vice president, and she has a lot of name recognition, but she's almost completely unknown as a candidate or as a politician.”
Peters argued that the debate was not a good opportunity to introduce Harris to voters because she only had two minutes to answer questions.
“I think she'll have to do more interviews eventually,” Peters said. “So far, she's only had one interview.”
Since President Joe Biden announced he was withdrawing his plans to run for reelection, Harris has not given any interviews or held any press conferences other than one with CNN host Dana Bash on August 29 while accompanying Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat.
