YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma County has explained why most of the grass and some of the trees at Ray Smucker Park recently began dying.
This has some locals wondering what is going on in the park.
Construction of a new reservoir forced Yuma County to replace the irrigation system near Smucker Park.
The replanting operation has not come without complications, with large areas of the lawn completely drying out and some trees also affected.
Johnny Martinez lives in Yuma and walks through the park every day to clean it up.
He hopes to see color return to the plants.
“It's not good, I mean, it's not good for people to walk here, it's not good, I mean, what are they waiting for? No water? But what are they going to do,” Martinez said.
Yuma County Engineer Alan Quintero shared that the county is currently working on repairing irrigation systems to restore the landscape.
“There were issues with some components of the existing tank that are currently being resolved. Once the repairs are completed and replaced, we will be able to supply water to the water tank and return the park to its previous irrigation system,” Quintero said.
The new irrigation system is expected to be up and running in about two to three weeks, according to Yuma County.
