Shooting suspect was “trying to get the devil out” of victims, Yavapai County deputies say

Cordes Lakes, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — Investigators say a man is being charged with “casting out demons” by Yavapai County lawmakers after he shot a neighbor and shot his wife. The shooting occurred in Cordes Lakes just after 1pm on Saturday.

A 43-year-old neighbor called 911 and said Joshua Johnson, 31, had shot her. She went to Johnson’s house and told him his dog was on the loose. That’s when he shot her in the neck, investigators said. She was able to escape and hide in the back of a truck thanks to the help of her other neighbors.Deputies arrived and she was taken to hospital.

After Johnson shot the woman, he went inside the house and shot his wife, the YCSO said. Lawmakers say Johnson barricaded herself inside her home as she tried to flee with her 18-month-old baby. A SWAT team then surrounded the house. A 911 dispatcher eventually convinced Johnson to leave the house and surrender to police. A representative did not say whether Johnson’s wife suffered gunshot wounds.

Johnson admitted to shooting both women and said he was “casting the devil out of both victims”. He was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct.
