Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has requested military aircraft and vehicles as security threats increase, multiple media outlets reported on Friday.
In the wake of two assassination attempts and growing Iranian threats against President Trump, the campaign has ordered the former president to install bulletproof glass during rallies in key battleground states and to fly over his residence and events. No presidential candidate in recent years has used military aircraft to travel ahead of an election, but after the administration confirmed that Iran was still actively planning to kill President Trump, drones and missiles were used. The federal government is stepping up security measures as concerns grow over the possibility of an attack.
The Trump campaign shared the request after being briefed on current national security threats, according to emails sent over the past two weeks reviewed by The Washington Post. Trump campaign manager Susie Wiles shared her belief that the Secret Service would need additional support before making the request, according to Politico. reported.
The Washington Post reported that Mr. Wiles was also a member of the Secret Service after a public event for the former president was canceled due to “lack of staffing,” and Mr. Trump was placed in the same room as reporters instead. The Washington Post says there are plans to hold more rallies in the final weeks of the campaign, although some events have been hampered by security threats. Mr. Wiles also expressed frustration in an email to the Secret Service that the government had not sought a “sufficiently broad-based plan” to adequately protect the former president. But Secret Service officials said Mr. Trump was receiving aggressively increased protection.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said, “Support from the Department of Defense is routinely provided to protect the former president, including explosive ordnance disposal, canine units, and airlift transportation.” said CBS News. Guglielmi added that the Secret Service has also “imposed temporary flight restrictions (TFR)” at the former president’s residence and during his travels. Additionally, the former president has received top-level technological security assets, including unmanned aerial vehicles, anti-unmanned aerial surveillance systems, ballistic and other advanced technology systems. ”
A senior U.S. official said the Trump campaign’s request is under consideration, but there are some restrictions regarding bulletproof glass, according to the Washington Post. Some officials said the camp’s request for military aircraft was unlikely to be approved given current intelligence information.
