The highly conservative Cochise County elections official resigned Tuesday after serving five years in the position, citing a physically and emotionally threatening work environment. Just months after two Republican overseers sued her to force a hand count of the election results.
During the 2022 election, the Cochise County Board of Supervisors required a hand count of all ballots illegal under state law. A legal back-and-forth caused delays, and the results were certified after a court order was issued.
Marla’s attorney said “objectively difficult and unpleasant working conditions” also contributed to her resignation.
County spokesperson Jane Montgomery said Mara’s resignation is still being treated as an internal personnel matter until further details are available.
Mara is just one of many election officials across the country who have resigned due to the increasingly polarizing political environment.
