Fmr Harris Comms Dir Says Dems Must ‘Stop Underestimating’ Trump, Get On ‘Right Side’ Of Voters’ Views On Institutions

Former Harris Communications director Jamal Simmons says Democrats should “stop underestimating” President-elect Donald Trump and instead get on the “right side” of how voters view an organization they don’t believe in. He said he needed to stand up.

Since Trump won both the electoral college and the popular vote Tuesday night, Democrats have questioned whether Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign went in the wrong direction for voters. On CNN’s “Erin Burnett Outfront,” Burnett told Simmons that Trump appears to have a clear plan as he continues to name the next administration. . Burnett then asked a former Harris aide what Democrats should prepare for under the new administration.

“One of the things Democrats have to do is stop underestimating Donald Trump, right? This puts them in a tight spot against Joe Biden twice, and almost for the third time. But I think it’s because Joe Biden didn’t have that much of a lead in the Electoral College, right?” Simmons said. “So Democrats should stop underestimating Donald Trump and the fact that there are many Americans in this country who feel like they’re on the outside, obviously the majority of Americans. You have to start paying attention.”

“One of the things that Trump did well was something that was a little bit sneaky from a Democratic perspective, but he got away with it. He put himself on the side of people who were against the organization on the outside. “Democrats shouldn’t defend institutions that people don’t think will take care of them,” Simmons said.

Simmons went on to highlight his concerns about the second Trump administration and questioned the president’s unpredictability. (Related: Obama aide says Democrats are “stigmatizing” Republicans as a “cultural elite” that has alienated working-class voters)

“So it’s time for Democrats to think about how we can get on the right side of these systems. And what I’m concerned about with the administration is that in the Clinton administration, which started when I was a kid, As you know, we believed that soft power, or economic power, was the priority. The Bush administration was led by the military, as was the Obama administration.

“This is something like [a] It’s your puzzle skills, right? No one knows what they’re up to or what Donald Trump will do. I think he’s trying to use it to his advantage, but it can also lead to mistakes, right? So, because we don’t know, it’s a place of infestation, and it’s ripe for mistakes to happen on the international stage, and it can be deadly. It can be deadly. ”

President Trump announced Monday night that he will appoint Republican Florida Rep. Mike Walz to be his White House national security adviser, according to the Wall Street Journal. Walz’s participation in the new Trump administration came shortly after the former president announced that Tom Homan, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, would become the new “border czar.” Former New York Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin will join as the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency.
