Which Maricopa County race could be headed for a recount?

Phoenix (AZ Family) — Only 227 votes separate the candidates vying for the Maricopa County District 3 Supervisor seat. This is a race where there is a good chance that a recount will take place.

As of Thursday morning, Republican Kate Brophy McGee had 183,034 votes, compared to 182,807 for her opponent, Democrat Daniel Valenzuela.

A spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office said it is too early to say definitively which races will be subject to automatic recounts. However, we should know for sure after that, as November 21 is the deadline for the Supervisory Board to request returns.

When will a recount occur in Arizona?

You may remember that a new state law went into effect for the 2022 midterm elections, increasing the possibility of a recount. Automatic recounts are now required when the margin between two candidates is within 0.5%. Previously, recounts were only done if votes were within 0.1% of each other.

Two statewide races and one Maricopa County race underwent recounts in 2022, according to Arizona Family Records.

Before a recount can begin, the Secretary of State’s office must visit every county in Arizona to perform logic and accuracy tests on the equipment. The equipment must be reprogrammed to only count the contest in question. All political parties are involved in this process.

How often does a recount change the results?

According to a survey from Nonprofit Fair Votingstatewide recounts are rare, and reversals of results are even rarer. The group found that from 2000 to 2023, there were 36 recounts across the state. As a result of the recount, only three cases were reversed.
