The man’s family claims that newly released body camera footage shows the officer exiting the cell.
PHOENIX — the family of a man who died in Phoenix Maricopa County The prison filed a lawsuit two years ago, alleging that police officers used unreasonable force during the arrest.
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court last Friday, seeks unspecified general and punitive damages.
The Arizona Republic reports that 31-year-old Akeem Terrell has been detained after refusing to leave a New Year’s Day party in 2021.
According to the lawsuit, up to seven Phoenix police officers were above Terrell in the prison isolation cell, holding him down while changing handcuffs.
Terrell’s family claims that newly released body camera footage shows an officer exiting the cell.
The lawsuit alleges police delayed a medical summons for the 6-foot-2 Terrell, who reportedly weighed over 400 pounds.
The city of Phoenix declined to comment on the lawsuit. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return an email from the Associated Press seeking comment on the lawsuit on Wednesday.
