MSNBC Contrib Credits Trump With ‘One Attribute That Distinguishes Him From’ All Other Political Candidates

MSNBC contributor Sam Stein on Monday praised President-elect Donald Trump’s ability to overcome obstacles that would normally end the careers of other politicians.

Trump decisively defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election, despite facing four criminal charges during the campaign. Stein acknowledged on “Morning Joe” that Trump’s resilience and strategic approach to legal issues were key to his success. “In terms of what we’re talking about, we also thought a year ago that this was going to be a court campaign. How is he going to get out of the court? And it ended up being that he took advantage of it,” Stein said. “The real lesson from all of this is that you can say what you want about Donald Trump, but he has one quality that sets him apart from everyone else in politics: his insatiable perseverance. I think he’s the type of person that other politicians usually bend to. He’ll go through with the things he would have done. And he’ll figure it out and just claw back and fight it. And he’ll turn it to his advantage. And he became a martyr to his trials.”

“He rallied other members of the Republican Party around him, and if you talk to people in his world, there was a time when the primary itself was uncertain, right? [Republican Florida Gov.] “Ron DeSantis seemed to have the upper hand, it’s unclear if he can win, but it certainly seemed like a possibility,” he continued. “And what happened was that the indictment came down and everyone, including DeSantis, rushed to Trump’s side. I think ultimately Trump was able to use that to get the nomination. It changed the course of history.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis acknowledged in December 2023 that the indictment of Trump had a negative impact on the presidential election.

“If I could change one thing, I would wish Trump had not been indicted for this, to be honest with you. [Democratic Manhattan District Attorney] Alvin Bragg, I’ve been criticizing this incident, but I don’t think anyone like Bragg would have done that incident if it were anyone other than Donald Trump, and that’s bad because people like that pervert justice. That’s true,” DeSantis said. “But I also think it skewed the primary, and I think those were the main issues that happened.”

He added that the charges “sucked a lot of oxygen” out of the reserve.

The Trump campaign announced in May that it had raised $34.8 million, shortly after a Manhattan jury convicted Mr. Bragg on all 34 charges of falsifying business records.
