Following Election, A Half-Dozen Dems Flip Their Votes To Support Laken Riley Act

After the November election, a vote against a bill, dubbed the Laken-Reilly Act, would require federal immigration authorities to detain undocumented immigrants who commit theft-related crimes in the United States after the November election. There were six Democratic Party members.

The bill would also allow states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their residents by illegal immigration. 159 House Democrats voted against the bill. However, previously, six House Democrats opposed Last Congress’ bill changed their minds; turned over their vote.

The Daily Caller reached out to all six House Democrats who changed their votes to ask what had changed, but none immediately responded.

The six Democrats who changed their votes are:

  • Pennsylvania Congressman Brendan Boyle
  • Oregon Congressman Val Hoyle
  • Georgia Congresswoman Lucy McBath
  • New York State Representative Joseph Morrell
  • Alabama Congressman Terry Sewell
  • New York State Representative Richie Torres

The bill ultimately passed the House by a vote of 264-159, with all Republicans voting in favor. In the end, 48 Democrats voted in favor of the bill. It will now be submitted to the Senate. (Related: 159 Democrats voted against Laken-Riley law)

Jose Antonio Ybarra, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela who illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border, was convicted in November of killing 22-year-old Riley. He was arrested by University of Georgia Police.
